Stage 1 of 6
DAYS 1–2: KIGALI – HISTORY, CULTURE & ARRIVAL
Your journey begins in Kigali at the iconic Hôtel des Mille Collines, a historic property known internationally for its role during the 1994 genocide and later immortalised through the film Hotel Rwanda. Today, the hotel combines elegant comfort with panoramic city views, lush gardens, and a calm atmosphere in the heart of Rwanda’s capital. Time in Kigali allows for a gentle arrival, with opportunities to explore local cafés, art galleries, vibrant markets, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, offering meaningful insight into Rwanda’s remarkable history and transformation.

DAYS 3–6: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK – SAVANNAH & WILDLIFE EXPEDITION
Leaving Kigali behind, the route leads east into Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the Big Five. Over four days, you move between three carefully selected campsites spread across different sections of the park, each offering a distinct perspective of Akagera’s landscapes. Open plains, rolling hills, wetlands, and shimmering lakes create constantly changing scenery as you drive deeper into the reserve. Early mornings and late afternoons are dedicated to game drives, where elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, rhinos, and countless antelope species can often be observed. Evenings are spent around the campfire under vast African skies, with the distant sounds of wildlife creating an authentic safari atmosphere.

DAYS 7–8: LAKE MUHANZI & THE TWIN LAKES – SCENIC HIGHLANDS
The journey continues north into Rwanda’s lush highlands, where the tranquil waters of Lake Muhazi and the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo provide a dramatic contrast to the savannah landscapes of Akagera. Lakeside lodges and peaceful camps create a slower rhythm, perfect for relaxation after the safari portion of the journey. Scenic drives through terraced hills and traditional villages reveal Rwanda’s famous “Land of a Thousand Hills” at its most picturesque. Optional activities include kayaking, boat excursions, cycling, and guided community visits, while quiet evenings overlooking the water offer a serene and intimate experience.

DAYS 9–10: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK – GORILLAS & MOUNTAIN FOREST
Entering the mist-covered landscapes of Volcanoes National Park, the journey reaches one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Dense bamboo forests and volcanic slopes provide the setting for unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences, where small guided groups hike into the mountains to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Guests also have the option to track playful golden monkeys or explore the park through scenic hiking routes. Luxury lodges positioned near the park offer fireplaces, panoramic volcano views, and refined comfort after rewarding days spent in the forest. The combination of rare wildlife encounters and dramatic scenery makes this one of the defining highlights of the journey.

DAYS 11–12: LAKE KIVU – RELAXATION ON THE SHORE
After the mountain forests, the route descends toward the peaceful shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s great lakes. Here the atmosphere becomes calm and restorative, with comfortable lakeside accommodation offering private beaches, sunset terraces, and sweeping water views. Days are intentionally unhurried, allowing time for swimming, kayaking, boat excursions, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the lake. The surrounding hills and fishing villages create a gentle and authentic backdrop, making Lake Kivu the perfect mid-journey retreat.

DAYS 13–14: NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK – ANCIENT RAINFOREST & FINAL ADVENTURE
The final stage of the journey leads south into Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Thick jungle landscapes, waterfalls, and mist-covered valleys define this extraordinary region. Guided forest walks reveal chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, orchids, and countless bird species hidden within the canopy. Guests can also experience Nyungwe’s famous canopy walkway, suspended high above the rainforest floor and offering spectacular panoramic views. Evenings are spent in elegant forest lodges surrounded by nature, creating a peaceful and memorable conclusion to the expedition.
